The kiddo has been having really bad headaches and such pretty much since we moved to Fort Bliss in August. We've chalked it up to weather changes, allergies, sinus issues but no treatment has actually worked. So Friday he was crying while getting ready for school and I said forget it, we are going to the doc. On top of the headache he also has been complaining for a few days if a really sore throat. We thought he had the start of a little nasty cold going on but better to be safe than sorry.
Doctor says all is clear, post nasal drip is causing the sore throat and since he doesn't have a fever just let him rest today from school and use tylenol / mortin for pain. Ok- gotcha. Go home rest. Way easy enough.
Friday evening before bed, we started with a fever. Continue through the night with fever spikes and sweating. Saturday morning, lots of nausea and chills, sweats, and fever, fever and more fever throughout the day.
We had a brief break for a few hours then he went to sleep and about 230am back with a fever of a steady 102.1 that stayed till Sunday morning.
Finally, after he got more meds in and went back to sleep around 315am, when we woke up it was off to El Paso Children's Hospital. When your kids in tears, his heads hurting, throat and now is so hot and uncomfortable that he won't even open his mouth or move his arm for a temperature reading and shaking from the fever, it's time to go in.
After getting turned around thanks to my awesome iPhones map... We walk into a children's hospitals ER entrance to metal detectors and a security guard. We have a child in just his underwear who's burning up and red all over plus we tried to wrap him in a blanket because well, even though we are in the borderland, it's only in the 30s and 40s right now. brrr!
So I have a back pack along with my coat on and lots of keys, his nebulizer machine, meds, etc. and I have to empty all of my pockets, open the back pack and he starts asking questions. Then low and behold as Adams trying to go through, BARF CITY!!! All over Adam, all over the blanket and all over the metal detector and carpeted floor. Go team Hinman! After that the security guard was like never mind, go through this entry way. Yea- ya think dude.... Screw your metal detector right now. Call the clean up crew.
Kid keeps barfing, Adams tending to him and I go to the check in desk. I have to say, they cut through the bullshit and got us right in. A few quick questions and insurance info and we got into triage then a room within like 10 minutes or less. That's almost unheard of even at a regular ER!
Total visit time was about two hours. A resident doc and a pediatrician came in and evaluated our kiddo and both agreed if a chest and sinus X-ray was clear we could go home. Got discharged with some zofran in his belly and instructions for an upper respiratory infection and instructed to keep doing what we are doing. Hey, as a parent, it's always good to know your doing something right. Oh, and we are seasoned pros with this fever crap, among other ailments kids tend to get.
Our morning at home before going in. Roger, our ever so faithful rescue and service dog never leaves his, or anyone's side when they are sick. Especially our sons.
Meds in!!! Perked up a bit to at least play with the gloves. :)
Yup. Mom had to make a Walgreens run for mom and dad cold meds and a few meds and items for the kiddo. Like a new thermometer.
And finally a bathed, resting, stuff head kiddo who's fever is under control for now. Lets hope it stays that way.
See- told you that dog doesn't leave him.
❤
I have to say- for our first "official" ER visit to the El Paso Children's hospital, it was a great experience. Friendly staff, quick intervention and helpful staff too! Another cool thing, they brought the children's X-ray machine into our room so we didn't even have to leave and go to radiology! Do you know how awesome that is with any kid, let alone one that has a form of autism?! He got to sit comfortably in the bed he was already in with minimal disruption. BIG mommy points to them!
Here is hoping for lots of uninterrupted resting tonight and tomorrow.
